Major Activities of the GIAJ
1. Enhancing the dissemination and understanding of general insurance
To help improve consumer understanding of general insurance, the GIAJ provides a variety of information via its website and by having lecturers give speeches and presentations at various institutions, etc.
2. Responding to consultations, complaints and disputes
In its role as a designated dispute resolution organization under the Insurance Business Act, the GIAJ operates the Sonpo ADR center (General Insurance Counseling and ADR Center) to answer consumer inquires and carry out proceedings for complaint and dispute resolution from a neutral and fair standpoint.

3. Improving the quality of insurance business practices/operations
The GIAJ makes use of its position as a third-party organization to improve the quality of industry-wide business practices/operations through advancing measures based on consumer feedback while at the same time establishing many other guidelines.
4. Maintaining and improving the business environment of general insurance
The GIAJ carries out research and studies, and issues various general insurance industry requests and proposals in order to maintain and improve the business environment. It also plays key roles in industry-wide systems, such as information exchange systems for promoting proper underwriting and claim payments.
5. Ensuring the stable and continuous provision of general insurance
In order to maintain a stable insurance system, the GIAJ conducts activity that contributes to the stable and continuous provision of general insurance.
6. Preventing/reducing damage caused by accidents, disasters and crimes
The GIAJ makes efforts to reduce social losses by conducting educational activities and submitting proposals for traffic safety, and disaster and crime prevention.
7. Education and examinations for agents/solicitors and adjusters/loss assessors
In order to enhance the quality of insurance solicitation and promote proper claim payments, the GIAJ implements educational programs and examination systems.
8. Coordination of government subsidies, etc. that contribute to the activities listed in the preceding items
In light of the possible necessity of more coordinated responses with the government and other administrative agencies under the changing environment, such as increasingly severe, more frequent natural disasters and heightened geopolitical risks, the GIAJ conducts activity related to government subsidies, etc.
9. Contribution to the global community
The GIAJ actively engages in international activities. It participates in the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) standard setting activities, closely monitors and advocates multilateral and regional trade discussions, enhances exchanges and cooperation with overseas insurance markets, and holds international seminars/courses with participants from the East Asian region via the Insurance School (Non-Life) of Japan (ISJ), etc.

Every year, the General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ) publishes a "FACT BOOK" in Japanese and English. Although the English version is not as comprehensive as the Japanese one, it does provide information on the GIAJ's main activities and initiatives, as well as the business results of its member companies (based on various statistical data).
