GIAJ Reinforces the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake Response

We, the General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ), have reinforced our capabilities to respond to the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. In addition to the Earthquake Insurance Local Headquarters for disaster control, which the GIAJ set up in Fukuoka on April 15, we established the Earthquake Insurance Central Command, headed by the Chairman, at our head office in Tokyo, and the local correspondence base in Kumamoto, respectively on April 18. The establishment of the Central Command is only the second case in the history of the GIAJ, the preceding one being for the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

The GIAJ is responding to consultations about earthquake insurance at its General Insurance Consultation and ADR Support Center. It is also operating a call center with the exclusive purpose of responding to inquiries from policyholders in the affected areas about insurance contracts, for example, which company contracts are held with, etc. For the time being, both centers are open not only on weekdays, but also on weekends and holidays.

Each GIAJ member insurer is doing its utmost to ensure swift payment of earthquake insurance claims.
