East Asian Insurance Day

One of the most important activities of the General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ) is to promote mutual understanding and interchanges with overseas general insurance markets through the exchange of information and opinions, including active participation in the East Asian Insurance Congress (EAIC), which is the biggest international insurance conference in Asia.

On the occasion of the East Asian Insurance Day, which was launched in 2006 by the EAIC to help the public gain a better understanding of the role of insurance in East Asia, Mr. Shinichi Hirose, the Chairman of the GIAJ has delivered a message both at home and abroad.

Greetings in commemoration of the East Asian Insurance Day

To commemorate “East Asian Insurance Day” (October 18), which was established by the East Asian Insurance Congress (EAIC), I would like to make a few remarks on behalf of the General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ).
I also wish to express my deepest condolences to the victims of COVID-19 and extend my sincerest sympathies to the victims’ families as well as those who have been affected by the pandemic.

When EAIC was first held on October 18, 1962, it had only around 20 overseas participants. Currently, it gathers more than 2,000 attendees from 23 regions and has grown into the largest insurance congress in Asia. Unfortunately, the congress scheduled for this year has been postponed due to COVID-19, and the 30th congress is scheduled to be held in Seoul in 2022.
East Asian Insurance Day, which we celebrate the fourteenth annual day this year, was established in 2006 to promote importance of insurance and recognition of its role in each region as well as the understanding of EAIC’s activities.
I understand that promoting further penetration of insurance in each regions through this day is very beneficial, as it will contribute to the sound development of the insurance industry and prosperity of East Asian society.

Mr. Shinichi Hirose, Chairman
The General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ)

In addition, East Asian Insurance Day is also a day to recognize the long history and close relationship between EAIC and Insurance School (Non-Life) of Japan (ISJ).
Since 1972, GIAJ has been hosting the ISJ programs, an international insurance technical assistance program for industry professionals in East Asia that was established in response to EAIC’s request and recommendation by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
With its long history in providing assistance to insurance industry professionals of East Asian regions, ISJ now has more than 2,150 graduates and is recognized by insurance industry professionals in participating regions as a highly recognized program.
With the impact of COVID-19, GIAJ will be providing this year’s program through online.

In order to promote the role and importance of insurance as well as understanding of EAIC’s activities on East Asian Insurance Day, GIAJ will continue to take the following initiatives:

1) Continue communication and public relation activities through GIAJ’s website and insurance business publications.
2) Contact 2,150 ISJ graduates to encourage them to attend the next EAIC.

In its long history, the general insurance industry has overcome numerous tribulations such as countless large-scale natural disasters and various societal changes.
Although we continue to face uncertainty due to COVID-19, we recognize that it is our mission to continue taking on challenges to protect our customers from emerging and increasing risks in the wake of drastic environmental changes and continue to fulfil our role to expand “safety” of the people.
I hope that East Asian Insurance Day serves as an opportunity for all those who work in the insurance industry of East Asian regions to redefine the role and importance of insurance to support social and economic development, and also to rediscover the importance of cooperation between East Asian regions through the EAIC.
I offer my sincerest congratulations on this commemorative day and hope for the further development and growth of the East Asian insurance market.
